I started a new project called A GNU Way Of Thinking! A GNU Way Of Thinking is a website, video blog and audio oggcast that will document my journal of moving from Proprietary to FREE Software. This website will be dedicated to teaching you the visitor and follower about the GNU FREE Software and how you can break free from the chains that bind you.
Who’s In Control Of Your Software?
You may think you’re in control of your operating system and software because you drive the mouse, but if you’re running proprietary software from companies like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Adobe and many others you’re not actually in control, they are. FREE Software does not mean zero cost, but often times it is gratis. FREE Software is software that doesn’t control you, rather is gives you FREEDOM to use, modify and redistribute the software to help other people. To be classified as FREE Software is must give you the four essential freedoms.
- The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
- The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
- The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).
- The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
